Williamson, West Virginia - On Wednesday, Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was fatally shot by a lone gunman just minutes after noon while he was taking a lunch break. The Mingo County Sheriff's Office confirmed, that a lone gunman was taken into custody after being shot while he fled the scene. The suspect was identified as Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, of Delbarton, according to West Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous.
Sheriff Crum was taking his lunch break at an underpass on Harvey Street near the Mingo County courthouse when Maynard walked up to Crum and then shot him at point-blank and then fled. Maynard was then shot nearby and taken into custody by police and deputy sheriffs. Maynard remains alive and no information about his condition was available.
The courthouse was evacuated when the shooting occurred. A press conference is expected to be held later at 6:00 p.m., according to the Mingo County Sheriff's Office.
